In his captivating book, "Vincennes: Images of America," local historian and author Richard Day invites readers to embark on a photographic journey through the annals of this historic city. With over 200 vintage images, Day paints a vivid portrait of Vincennes' past, from its humble beginnings as a French trading post to its transformation into a thriving industrial and cultural hub.
The French Colonial Era
The establishment of Vincennes in 1732 by French fur trader François-Marie Bissot de Vincennes marked the beginning of European settlement in the Wabash Valley. The settlement grew rapidly, becoming a major trading center and a hub for French military operations in the region. In 1763, following the French and Indian War, Vincennes was ceded to the British, who renamed it Fort Sackville.
Under British rule, Vincennes remained an important strategic outpost. However, tensions between the British and the Native American tribes in the area led to the outbreak of Pontiac's War in 1763. During the war, Fort Sackville was besieged by Native American forces, but the British garrison successfully held out until reinforcements arrived.
The American Revolution and the Northwest Territory
In 1778, during the American Revolution, a group of American frontiersmen led by George Rogers Clark captured Vincennes from the British. Clark's victory was a major turning point in the war, as it secured the American hold on the Ohio Valley and helped to pave the way for the eventual establishment of the Northwest Territory.
After the war, Vincennes became the capital of the Northwest Territory, a vast region that encompassed present-day Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and parts of Minnesota. William Henry Harrison, who later became the ninth President of the United States, served as the first territorial governor of Indiana Territory, which was headquartered in Vincennes.
The 19th and 20th Centuries
In the 19th century, Vincennes continued to grow and prosper. The city became a major center for agriculture, trade, and transportation. Steamboats plied the Wabash River, connecting Vincennes to markets in the East and the West. The city also became a center for education, with the establishment of Vincennes University in 1801 and Indiana State University in 1865.
During the Civil War, Vincennes remained loyal to the Union. The city served as a training ground for Union troops and was the site of a Confederate raid in 1863. After the war, Vincennes continued to grow and develop, becoming a major industrial center in the early 20th century.
Vincennes Today
Today, Vincennes is a thriving city with a rich cultural heritage. The city is home to numerous historic landmarks, including the George Rogers Clark National Historical Park, the Grouseland Mansion, the Old Cathedral, and St. Francis Xavier Church. Vincennes is also home to Ellis Park Racecourse, one of the oldest and most prestigious horse racing tracks in the country.
With its vibrant arts scene, thriving downtown, and welcoming community, Vincennes offers visitors a unique glimpse into the history and culture of the American Midwest. Richard Day's "Vincennes: Images of America" is an invaluable resource for anyone who wants to learn more about this historic city and its enduring legacy.
