The rioters breached the Capitol Building at approximately 2:15 p.m. ET, and they quickly overwhelmed the Capitol Police. The mob forced its way into the building, and they began to ransack the offices of members of Congress. The rioters also vandalized the Capitol Building, and they stole property from the building.
The attack on the Capitol Building lasted for several hours, and it ended when the rioters were finally dispersed by law enforcement. Five people died in the attack, including one Capitol Police officer.
The Role of Trump's Cabinet
In the months since the insurrection, the House Select Committee has been investigating the events leading up to and including January 6th. Their findings have shed new light on the role played by Trump's cabinet members in the attack.
According to the committee's findings, several cabinet members were aware of Trump's plans to overturn the election results. These cabinet members included Vice President Mike Pence, Attorney General William Barr, and Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
The committee also found that several cabinet members played a role in the planning and execution of the attack on the Capitol Building. These cabinet members included White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, National Security Advisor Michael Flynn, and Trump's personal lawyer Rudy Giuliani.
The Aftermath of the Insurrection
The attack on the Capitol Building was a dark day for American democracy. It was an attack on the very foundations of our government, and it exposed the deep divisions within American society.
The House Select Committee is continuing to investigate the events leading up to and including January 6th. The committee's findings will help to ensure that such an attack never happens again.
In the meantime, we must all work together to heal the wounds that have been inflicted on our nation. We must work to bridge the divides that have been created, and we must work to restore faith in our democracy.
