Slave to Time: Makala Thomas's Journey to Freedom
Makala Thomas was born into a life of slavery in the American South in 1846. She was the daughter of a slave woman and a white plantation owner. Makala's mother died when she was young, and she was raised by her father's mistress. Makala was taught to read and write, and she was given a good education. But despite her education, Makala was still a slave. She was forced to work long hours in the fields, and she was often beaten and abused.

Escape from Slavery
Makala never gave up hope of freedom. She dreamed of a life where she could be free to make her own choices. In 1863, Makala heard about the Underground Railroad. The Underground Railroad was a network of secret routes and safe houses that helped slaves escape to freedom in the North. Makala decided to take the risk and escape.
With the help of a free black man, Makala made her way to the Ohio River. She crossed the river into Ohio, a free state. Makala was finally free.
Life After Slavery
After escaping from slavery, Makala made her way to Cincinnati, Ohio. She found work as a teacher and a writer. She also became an active abolitionist. Makala spoke out against slavery and helped to raise money for the Underground Railroad.
In 1879, Makala published her autobiography, "The Slave's Narrative." Her book was a powerful indictment of slavery and it helped to raise awareness of the plight of slaves. Makala's book is still read today, and it is an important part of the history of the abolitionist movement.
Makala Thomas was a remarkable woman. She overcame the horrors of slavery and became a successful writer and activist. Her story is an inspiration to us all. Makala's story shows us that anything is possible if we never give up hope.
